このたびは、中～上級の英語学習者向けプロジェクト型教育カリキュラム「Protecting Our Oceans」にご関心をお寄せいただき、誠にありがとうございます。

本カリキュラムは、クラーク記念国際高等学校が2025 年 1 月に札幌で開催した「日米・高校生環境サミット」で使用された教材とレッスンプランに基づいており、「日米・高校生環境サミット」に参加した両国の代表生徒が経験した探究的な学びを、日本のすべての高校生が体験できるようにデザインされています。

本カリキュラムは 3 つの「準備レッスン」と「高校生模擬環境サミット」に分かれています。3 つの授業レッスンは、環境問題、環境活動、環境キャンペーンを扱った比較的長い記事で構成されています。

本カリキュラムを通して、生徒たちが以下の 3 つの目標を実現できるようになることが私たちの願いです。

1. 環境問題を自分ごととして捉える。
2. 自分の生活の中で行動を起こす方法を見つける。
3. 気候変動と闘うために、他の人々に効果的に働きかけ、コミュニティとして協力する。

本カリキュラムは、生徒たちが自然環境を大切にし、保護するための継続的な活動プロセスの第一歩に過ぎないと考えています。そして、学校でこの問題に焦点を当て、真の解決策を生み出し、実行する時間を提供することで、私たち教育者も自然環境を大切にし、守りたいと願っていることを生徒たちに示すことになるのです。

これらの資料がお役に立つことを願っています。そして、私たちが 2025 年「日米・高校生環境サミット」に参加した代表生徒たちと一緒に取り組んだように、生徒たちの話し合いや計画から多くのインスピレーションを得られることを願っています。

– カリキュラム –

各レッスンは 1 授業時間（50分）ではなく、2～6授業時間分の活動が含まれています。本カリキュラムを指導することができる授業時間数に応じて、いくつかの活動を宿題として割り当てたり、活動を割愛したりすることも可能です。

Dear Educators,

Hello, and welcome to Protecting Our Oceans, a project based educational curriculum for advanced English language learners in Japan.

This curriculum is based on the materials and lesson plans which were used for the High School Environmental Summit held in Sapporo, Japan in January of 2025. These materials are designed to give students at all high schools in Japan an experience similar to the one had by student representatives at the 2025 Summit.

The curriculum is divided into three preparatory lessons and a Model High School Environmental Summit.
At the heart of each of the three preparatory lessons is a relatively long article dealing with environmental issues, activism, and environmental campaigns.

It is my hope that, through this curriculum, students will be able to realize the following three goals:

1. personalize environmental issues
2. identify ways to take action in their own life
3. effectively reach out to other people and work together as a community to fight against climate change.

It is my belief that this curriculum is simply the first step for students in what will be a continuous process of valuing and taking steps to protect our natural environment. And by providing students with time in school to focus on this issue and work to create and implement real solutions, we are showing our students that we, as educator, value and wish to protect our natural environment as well.

I hope that you find these materials useful. And I hope you find as much inspiration in your students’discussions and plans, as I did working with the representatives of the 2025 Environmental Summit.。

– Curriculum –

It is important to note that one lesson is not equal to one class hour. In fact, each lesson contains anywhere between 2 hours and 6 hours of worth of class time activities. Depending on how much class time you have available to implement this curriculum, you can decide to assign some activities as homework or even cut out activities entirely.
